All about Del Maguey Mezcal
Through deep cultural relationships with Zapotec Mexican Indian producers in the remote villages of Oaxaca, Mexico, Del Maguey harnesses ancient, original organic processes. Combining these methods with varying micro-climates and terroir gives each creation its own unique, rich, sweet and smoky character. Every product in their collection is made by individual family palenqueros (producers) in old-style villages. They are the first producer to credit each product after the village where the liquid is made.
Tasting Notes
VIDA de San Luis Del Rio is an artisanal, Organic Mezcal from Del Maguey, at an entry-level price point and broader availability. Launched in 2010, it is highly mixable and has arrived to much anticipated industry acceptance and high bartender demand. Hand crafted, it is twice distilled, very slowly in small wood-fired, riverside copper stills to flavor specifications that underscore its versatility in cocktails. Another masterpiece out of San Luis del Rio, it has a nose of fruit aromatics, a hint of honey, vanilla and roast agave; the palate offers ginger, cinnamon, burnt sandalwood, banana and tangerine, with a long, soft finish. Viva VIDA!
History/Trivia
Each bottle is named for the village where it was produced. An American mezcal enthusiast, Ron Cooper founded Del Maguey in 1995. The company now works with twelve families in Oaxaca and Puebla, four of whom have been with Del Maguey since inception.
An iconic L.A. artist illustrated the labels Ken Price, a sculptor renowned for his distinctive, acrylic-painted ceramics, drew Del Maguey’s label art. In the 1960s Price happened to live next door to company founder Ron Cooper in Ventura, California, and the two became lifelong friends.
